If your hiking involves climbing, there are hiking boots that are designed to accommodate climbing attachments that you may need when crossing steep mountains or icy paths. Backpacking is a hobby that can be awesome for anyone.
There are places to hike in every state and it is pretty easy to find info on-line these days. I like an occasional break from the madness of the city, and like to go out for a camping or hiking trip. It does not matter if the wind chill is dipping near zero and a foot of snow covers the ground as long as you can stay warm.
To prepare for a hiking trip, sometimes I train on a bike as it uses a lot of the same muscles you use when hiking uphill.
